# Breaking down a complex system into simpler parts

Solving math problems is one thing, but applying math to an engineering problem —well, that’s something completely different. See how you can take complex engineering problems and break them down to size.

If you’re going from a diagram to an equation, adding color can help you learn and visualize what variable goes where. In this sample lesson, we use Post-it® Super Sticky Notes to map the variables, so you can follow where each one goes when solving a complex circuit system.

• First, draw the circuit diagram on a flat surface — or use Post-it® Dry Erase Surface. • Use Post-it® Super Sticky Notes to color code the resistors within the diagram. • Then apply the same resistor colors to the math equation. • Keep in mind that the values of the variables don’t matter as much as where they go in the equation. As you continue to solve the equation to determine the total resistance of the circuit, watch where the variables (Post-it® Super Sticky Notes) go.
